NEWRY, Maine — A captain with the Andover Fire Department remains in critical care Monday after his vehicle was struck head-on by another vehicle, said Oxford County Deputy James McLamb.
McLamb said that at 11:21 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, Dennis Hall, a captain with the Andover Fire Department was traveling north on Sunday River Road in a GMC Sierra, where he was going to help make snow at Sunday River Ski Resort, when a Dodge Ram, driven by Matthew Hamel of Bethel, struck Hall’s vehicle.
McLamb said that Hamel was driving south and was coming from the Matterhorn Ski Bar at 292 Sunday River Road.
Hall suffered a “pretty bad head injury,” McLamb said, and was taken from the scene by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center.
“As of right now, he is still in critical condition, but his condition hasn’t worsened,” he added.
McLamb said that Hamel did not receive any injuries. However, he was transported to Rumford Community Hospital by Oxford County Deputy Joshua Daley for a blood draw to determine his blood-alcohol level.
“Those results are still pending,” McLamb said.
According to the daily activity log by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, an operating under the influence charge is pending the results of the blood draw.
While the crash reconstruction is still ongoing, McLamb said it appears Hamel crossed the center line and struck Hall head-on.
Both vehicles were totaled and were towed away, McLamb said.
