OLIVE, Okla. — A volunteer firefighter returned to his home state this week after sustaining serious injuries while providing relief to hurricane-stricken communities.

Silver City firefighter Zach Collins suffered serious injuries to his back and upper body after a tree collapsed on top of him during a cleanup assignment two weeks ago.

Upon his return, Collins’ colleagues welcomed him at the airport.

“It’s awesome. It’s family all right here,” Collins told NEWS9.

For Silver City Fire Chief Jason Bradley, the reunion was an emotional one.

“I’m trying to hold back the tears,” Chief Bradley said. “If you could only understand that.”
