GREENSBORO, N.C. — This Friday marks one year since an auto shop fire injured four Greensboro firefighters. Fire Chief Greg Grayson said three of the four men have recovered and are back on fire trucks.

“I think we move forward from that day and became a better department. We were just very blessed that everyone did eventually come home,” Chief Grayson said.

The man who received the worst injuries, Captain Thomas ‘Sterling’ Suddarth, has been on “light duty” since May. He’s helping train other firefighters using his experience at the Elm Street fire. “The roof is still continuing to settle across my chest and it’s getting heavier and heavier. And I started to feel the burns,” Capt. Suddarth said in a documentary the fire department released. This is the first time we’ve heard from Capt. Suddarth.
