EUREKA, Calif. — Thanks to the donations of times, labor and materials, a classroom local emergency agencies can use for training is one step closer to being finished.

For years, the Eureka Fire Department and Humboldt Fire Protection District have relied on the charity of churches for classroom space to train.

In September, construction began on a classroom near the water tower at Harris and L streets.

The Eureka High School building trades class, in association with the Humboldt Regional Occupational Program, is building the classroom.

“We needed a classroom and HROP needed a project,” said Fire Capt. 2 Bill Gillespie. “It fell in nicely.”

Tuesday, and concluding today, personnel from Frontier Fire Protection out of Carmichael and the Road Sprinkler Fitters Local 669 donated their expertise to the students to get a sprinkler system installed in the classroom.

The materials were donated by Action Fire Fab & Supply of Tracy.

Gillespie said the structure consists of a main classroom, a kitchen and a smaller meeting room.

It will also provide a more comfortable place for firefighters to stage while responding to a major incident.

In the past, they’ve staged in the Teen Center parking lot next door.

The location, Gillespie said, is centrally located so both departments can participate in training at the same time without leaving a part of the area uncovered.
