McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — A McKinleyville home slated for demolition has been turned over to the Arcata Fire District for a practice burn set for Monday evening.
The small house at 1051 Duchess Road off Windsor and School roads will be set ablaze around 7 p.m. The room-size fires will give firefighters an opportunity to observe the difference phases of fire behavior.
“Firefighter will also be working on company operations, search and rescue techniques, exposure protection and ventilation practices, fire hose deployment and pumping operations,” according to the Arcata Fire District. “All aspects of this training are similar to a real response to the residents of the Arcata Protection District.”
Prior to burning the donated property, the fire department contracted with a trained asbestos inspector to survey the structure. Any material testing positive for asbestos are removed before the house is set afire.
