KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An early morning fire engulfed a vacant three-story apartment building in Kansas City on Friday, forcing firefighters to evacuate and battle the blaze outside, a fire department spokesman said.

Firefighters responded about 5:30 a.m. to the fire in the 1600 block of E. Linwood Boulevard in the Linwood Homeowners-Ivanhoe neighborhood.

The first fire crews to arrive on the scene reported heavy fire on the first floor of the building, said Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins with the Kansas City Fire Department.

Before committing to a decision on scene, consider your justification for the choice and the feasibility of success, then identify possible solutions and alternatives

Firefighters began attacking the fire with multiple handheld fire hoses and searching the building for anyone inside. The search came back clear.

The fire grew in intensity, and the building’s stability became questionable, so crews evacuated the building and fought the blaze defensively, Hopkins said. Three aerial trucks sprayed water onto the fire from above.

No injuries were reported.

While firefighters battled the blaze, Linwood was closed between The Paseo and Woodland Avenue.
