Firefighters will Again Climb Lucas Oil Stadium to Honor FDNY Fallen Heroes

It was one of the most emotional moments of FDIC 2011. In 2012 firefighters gathering in Indianapolis will again have the chance to remember their fallen FDNY brothers and raise money to help their survivors and colleagues.

Anyone attending FDIC can now register for the Second Annual FDIC 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb on Friday, April 20 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs were created to honor the 343 members of the FDNY who died on September 11, 2001. The climbs are sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and proceeds benefit the FDNY Counseling Services Unit.

Check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m. at booth 9244 and the climb will begin at 1:00 p.m. Participants will climb the stadium stairwells multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers. Registrants will receive a photo and badge of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. Climbers will have the option to start in full turn-out gear and carry equipment, just as their fire service brothers did that morning, or wear their work uniforms or gym clothes.

“The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs are a meaningful way to honor those heroes of September 11th and reassure their survivors that their legacies will not be forgotten,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “We are very pleased to work with FDIC to bring the climb back for a second year.”

On September 11, 2011, the Foundation sponsored 35 climbs across the nation, raising more than $150,000 for the survivors. Similar climbs will occur around the country in 2012.
