NEW YORK — An obstacle course and trivia competition knocked Tacoma firefighters out of the top spot of a “Good Morning America” competition.
A three-member team made the final round last week after winning enough votes from their lip-synching video to Capital Cities’ song “Safe and Sound.”
Tuesday’s televised contest featured an obstacle course that challenged firefighters to quickly pull on their gear and work together in a line to dump water in a barrel.
Wednesday’s competition was a trivia quiz in Times Square.
After losing to McAllen Fire Department in Texas, Tacoma fire Lt. Debbie Garrison got dunked in a tank on national television. The winning department was given $10,000.
Tacoma’s team, which included firefighters Kurt Gordon and Kris Hampton, was to return home Wednesday night.
Department spokesman Joe Meinecke said the firefighters were disappointed about the loss but grateful to have represented the fire service so well.
“Even though economic realities have resulted in the downsizing of our department, we remain passionate about protecting people, property and the environment and keeping our community safe and sound,” he said.
