PALM BEACH, Fla. — Palm Beach Fire-Rescue personnel always have their hazardous material bags packed and ready to go.

An emergency call involving a possible biological or chemical hazard can come in at any time, as illustrated by the scares last Thursday and Friday at the Palm Beach County Courthouse and a similar incident last Thursday in Fort Lauderdale.

All three cases involved suspicious substances attached to pieces of mail. One was first thought to be a poisonous powder, tellurium, but was later determined to be a non-toxic substance. Another was believed to be a harmless sugar substitute, and the third appeared to be a dental adhesive. No one was injured.
