SALT LAKE CITY — Four people were hospitalized and about 30 others received medical attention on Thursday after the Bell Plaza building at 250 E. 200 South was evacuated about 3:30 p.m.
A chemical smell that crept into the building’s ventilation system caused the evacuation, according to Salt Lake Fire spokesman Scott Freitag. The fumes were created during a nearby concrete sealant project.
Freitag said the four who were hospitalized were likely suffering from other underlying problems before the “mass anxiety” situation occurred. The other 30 who received medical attention quickly recovered upon breathing fresh air.
“No one affected should have short-term or long-term health effects,” Freitag said. “We are confident there will be no more problems.”
Building tenants were allowed back inside about 7 p.m.
