MUMBAI, India — An official says a major fire has burned nearly 10,500 gallons (40,000 liters) of lubricant oil at a depot of state-owned Indian Oil Corporation in western India.

B.M. Bansal, the IOC chairman, says there were no casualties in the blaze that raged for nearly six hours, shooting flames into the sky on the outskirts of Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment center.

A preliminary inquiry suggests that an electrical short circuit could have started the fire at the plant, which was shut for the night, Bansal told the Press Trust of India.
