BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A fire captain with the Birmingham, Ala., Fire and Rescue Service collapsed and died Wednesday.
Billy A. Gafford suffered a suspected heart attack during a fitness check at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
He was immediately treated by other members who were on the scene, but was later pronounced dead.
Captain Gafford began his career as a firefighter/paramedic with the department in April 1984. He was 56 years old, and leaves behind a wife and two sons.
