WAREHAM, Mass. — Police are investigating after a 25-year-old male Onset firefighter was injured in a hit and run during the Nor’easter on Friday.

At approximately 7 p.m., Wareham Police Department patrol officers and Wareham EMS paramedics responded to Cranberry Highway in the area of the Onset Avenue intersection to the report of an on-duty Onset Fire Department firefighter struck by a passing motor vehicle, according to a press release.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that the involved vehicle had left the scene after causing serious injuries to the firefighter, who was responding to an incident on the highway during the storm. The firefighter was immediately transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The vehicle left the scene toward Bourne on Route 6 and 28 on Cranberry Highway immediately after striking the firefighter, according to an update Saturday afternoon on the Wareham Police Department Facebook page.

An investigation indicated the suspect vehicle could be a gray, newer model Subaru hatchback with extensive passenger side mirror damage and possible general front/passenger side damage, the release said.

At that time, the firefighter remained in critical condition with serious injuries, the post noted. When contacted Sunday afternoon, Wareham police and Massachusetts State Police, who are conducting the investigation, didn’t have additional information.
