FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The crews of Fort Wayne Fire Department Station 6, 1500 W. Coliseum Blvd., hosted an “all-American cookout” Thursday for the widow and sons of a German firefighter Dirk Fankhanel, who was killed while fighting a fire in 2012. The Fort Wayne firefighters developed a friendship with the Fankhanel family after they sent them a note of sympathy following Dirk Fankhanel’s death.

The Fankhanel family arrived in Fort Wayne Wednesday, after area fire departments, businesses and the firefighters’ union raised money to provide them with two weeks of the best entertainment available here, including dinners and cookouts to a Tincaps game, a visit to the Fort Wayne Childrens Zoo, a day at the lake, three days at Cedar Point.

Their visit to the United States will wrap up Aug. 9-12 with a visit to Washington D.C.
