LODD: Canadian volunteer firefighter dies en route to call

The 60-year-old firefighter’s truck left the road and went into a ditch

NEW GERMANY, Canada — A 60-year-old volunteer firefighter from New Germany in Canada’s Nova Scotia providence died when his truck left the road and went into a ditch. The firefighter, who’s name has not been released, was en route to a call for a flooded house.

Local police told the Herald News that it is too early to know if slippery road conditions were a factor. The crash occurred about 4 a.m. Friday.

“He was a dedicated volunteer firefighter for all those many years and he proved that by responding to that call today, as all of us do when it comes in,” New Germany Deputy Fire Chief Peter Bowers told the paper. The firefighter had been on the department since 1991.

This is the department’s first line of duty death.

“We’ve been very, very lucky that this has never happened to us before, but it’s happened to us now,” Chief Bowers said. “As firefighters, we all know it’s more than in the back of our minds how dangerous this work is, that sometimes things go wrong, but that doesn’t make it any easier.”
