AMHERST, Va. — Acknowledging that paid firefighters will be needed in Amherst, the Board of Supervisors has agreed to consider hiring one for the all-volunteer Amherst Fire Department.

“It’s a problem that’s going to get worse,” said the chief, Tom Shrader, because the department has fewer volunteers. “The need is here,” said Gary Roakes, Amherst County’s public safety director.

The county already has hired paid staff members for rescue squads. Besides the Amherst Fire Department, volunteers staff the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department and the Pedlar Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
