Nev. battalion chiefs agree to paycut

Tentative pact comes as Clark County struggles with a $50 million budget deficit

CLARK COUNTY, Nev. — The Clark County Fire Department’s battalion chief supervisory unit has agreed to a two-year contract that calls for a nearly 5 percent pay cut and reductions in callback and overtime.

In all, the tentative pact would reduce average annual compensation to battalion chiefs by more than $40,000 a year, including cuts to vacation and sick leave, a freeze to merit pay increases, reductions in longevity pay, and reductions in bonus leave for new employees. The agreement must be ratified by the County Commission and its nine battalion chiefs, who each manage 10 fire stations including budgets and staffing, and supervise fire and rescue operations.

The contract, between Clark County and Unit Local 1908 of the International Association of Firefighters would starts July 1 and ends June 30, 2013.

Earlier this month the county announced it has reached an agreement with the firefighters union that would save $4.2 million in the coming fiscal year through a 1.5 percent wage reduction, reductions in vacation and sick leave, a freeze on increases in longevity pay and tuition reimbursement, and reductions in remote pay and bonus leave for new employees. Combined with the contract settled in January for this fiscal year, savings over two years amount to $13.3 million annually, the county said at that time.

The tentative pact comes as Clark County struggles with a $50 million budget deficit and is looking at layoffs and eliminating some open positions.
