ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Albuquerque firefighter has been detained by federal officials and is facing possible deportation.

KOAT-TV reports that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents confirmed they took Jose Gonzalez into custody a few weeks ago.

But city officials said Monday they have a lot of questions about what led to the arrest.

Gonzalez works at the fire marshal’s office on Silver Street in downtown Albuquerque.

ICE agents said Gonzalez, who’s a Mexican national, was convicted of shooting at or from a motor vehicle back in 1999, but they won’t say anything about why they acted on the felony charge more than a decade later.

City’s records showed Gonzalez applied to the Albuquerque Fire department in late 2001, and on his application, he said he was in the U.S. legally.
