In this week’s The Command Post podcast, hosts Lt. Rom Duckworth and Chief Rob Wylie discuss the preliminary report that claims the deaths of fallen Boston firefighters Lt. Edward Walsh and firefighter Michael Kennedy was accidental.

Lt. Duckworth and Chief Wylie also talk about the recent study that claims Boston Fire and EMS is the most expensive emergency services department in the country.

“Knocking people off pedestals has become a national sport in this country,” Chief Wylie said. “Firefighters don’t ask to be put on a pedestal. We’re asked to be given the tools to do our jobs and a competitive wage. If your budget allows you to have that compensation, then you’ve earned it and deserved it.”

They also talk about Counter Narcotics and Terrorism Operational Medical Support (CONTOMS) in their frontline tactical tips segment.

Their leadership lessons segment explains why all firefighters, and not just the fire chief, should be engaged in the decisions their elected officials make.

“Elected officials want to hear from the people who are directly involved in whatever the law is going to affect,” Lt. Duckworth said. “If it’s emergency response, they want to hear from emergency responders and want to hear how it’s going to affect them. It really is up to the firefighters, company officers, everybody, to get involved in this thing. They really do want to hear your voice.”
