In this week’s The Command Post podcast, hosts Lt. Rom Duckworth and Chief Rob Wylie discuss D.C. Fire and EMS’ decision to require all employees to get a doctor’s note in order to call in sick.

“It seems like there are some cultural issues and this is more of a symptom of the problem rather than addressing the problem itself,” Rob said. “This a knee-jerk reaction to a problem without really understanding the gist of the problem and getting to the root of it.”

Lt. Duckworth and Chief Wylie also talk about what’s new in extrication with Les Baker, an engineer with the City of Charleston, S.C. and a fire instructor and extrication specialist who writes and presents on extrication topics and runs the annual Southeastern Extrication School, in their frontline tactical tips segment.

They also discuss when firefighters should retire in their leadership lessons segment.

“You’ve spent most of your adult life with this team and to think about that not being around anymore makes the decision all that difficult,” Rob said. “Ultimately, what it comes down to is you’ve got to decide if you’re still at the top of your game, able to contribute at the level your team needs you to contribute at.”
