SMITHS STATION, Ala. — Volunteer fire departments in Lee County could have to cut back services or close all together if a fire fee increase doesn’t pass.

Since 1989 folks who live outside the municipalities of Phenix City, Opelika and Auburn pay a $25 fire protection fee each year which goes towards sustaining six volunteer fire stations.

With rising fuel and operating costs Lee County voters in a special election Tuesday will decide to increase the fire fee in their district by another $25.
