LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville metro government , which already has paid out $71.2 million to cover back pay, pension benefits and interest for firefighters, must turn over an extra $6.2 million, a Jefferson judge has ruled.
In a two-page order issued Friday, Circuit Judge Judge Mary Shaw directed the city to pay $6,197,907 in interest on back pension benefits for 103 retired firefighters for the years 2010-2012.
Shaw rejected the city’s legal argument that interest should have accrued only on the net amount the retired firefighters would have received after taxes, saying the city had use of all the funds during the years.
