N.C. awards $8.7M grants to volunteer fire departments

644 volunteer fire departments received the annual grants that help buy firefighting equipment

WARREN, N.C. — Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Wayne Goodwin has announced local recipients of the 2012 Volunteer Fire Department Fund grants. This year, more than $8.7 million has been awarded to 644 volunteer fire departments across the state.

Recipients in Warren County are: Afton-Elberon, $5,367; Arcola, $9,372; Churchill-Five Forks $20,517; Drewry, $19,440; Hawtree $4,950; Inez $17,930; Macon Rural $2,100; Norlina $29,3651; Ridgeway $10,835; Soul City $8,635; Warrenton Rural $30,000.

The Volunteer Fire Department Fund, administered by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal, was created by the General Assembly in 1988 to provide dollar-for-dollar matching grants to assist volunteer fire departments with the purchase of equipment and capital expenditures. The maximum annual award amount is $30,000 per applicant.
