WATERTOWN, N.Y. — State Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, announced Wednesday that she secured $25,000 in grant funding to support local volunteer fire departments in Oswego County.

The funding will allow 10 departments to purchase more equipment to improve safety and efficiency. Each department will receive $2,500.

“Each and every day, volunteer firefighters put their lives at risk to protect our communities and keep them safe,” Sen. Ritchie said in a news release. “This funding will help them purchase the vitally important equipment they need to respond to not just fires, but all sorts of other emergencies throughout our region. I am proud to be able to support these heroes, and thank them for the critical work they do to safeguard the people of Central New York.”

Terry Clark Jr., West Amboy Volunteer Fire Company chief, said the funding is vital to improving safety.

“Having up-to-date, quality safety and rescue equipment is essential to the work we do as volunteer firefighters,” said Mr. Clark. “We would like to thank Sen. Ritchie for securing this funding, which will help make it easier for us to respond to any calls for help from people throughout our communities.”

The following fire departments will receive a piece of the funding:

  • Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department
  • Hannibal Fire Company
  • Cleveland Fire Department
  • Palermo Volunteer Fire Department
  • West Amboy Volunteer Fire Company
  • West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department
