Ind. firefighter killed in crash while responding to call

Roy Smith is believed to have been responding to a stranded motorist in high water before his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. — A Clay County volunteer firefighter died Saturday morning while responding to a call.

Dead is Roy Smith, 60, of North Centerpoint.

The Clay County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death, which happened on Indiana 42 between Indian 59 and County Road 100 East.

Cause and manner of death remain under investigation. An autopsy was scheduled at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. The coroner’s statement said Lawson-Miller Chapel is handling arrangements.

Reporting agencies included Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, STAR Ambulance Service, Clay County Coroner’s Office and Parke County Coroner’s Office.

STAR Ambulance on its Facebook page said, " The Clay County Emergency Response Community lost a central figure and pillar early this morning. Roy Smith tragically lost his life while doing what he was so often doing ... responding to a call for help.

“A friend and a mentor to countless individuals in the region, including so many of our staff. A tremendous loss that the community will feel immediately and immensely. Our condolences are with the Smith family and to all of Roy’s friends who are hurting.”
