BOSTON — Boston firefighter Robert “Bobby” T. Kilduff Jr. died after falling from the third floor of a burning home in Dorchester on May 23, NBC Boston reported.
Kilduff, a member of Rescue Co. 2, suffered severe injuries at the fire on Treadway Road and later died at Boston Medical Center, Fire Commissioner Rodney Marshall said during a midnight news conference.
“Boston lost a hero tonight,” Mayor Michelle Wu said. “Because of his actions tonight, working alongside his fellow firefighters, every single resident came out of the flames safe and sound.”
Kilduff, a third-generation firefighter and U.S. Marine veteran, served with the Boston Fire Department for 24 years. He is survived by his adult son and daughter.
Fire officials said crews used an aggressive interior and exterior attack to contain the fire, which spread across all three floors of the building. Multiple ground and aerial ladders were deployed.

“Bobby Kilduff earlier today responded to a call and actually saved someone during a tech rescue and it just goes to tell people that the men and women that come out and do these first responder jobs, we’re not safe until we actually get home,” Marshall said. “You could be returning from a fire, you could be returning from a call, but you’re never truly safe until you’re home. And Bobby is home now with God. And we just ask again that you keep his family in your prayers.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
