Update May 4, 2020: Jackson Fire Chief Don Nickerson Sr. told the Bangor Daily News that Moore tested positive for COVID-19 after his death.
JACKSON, Maine — A Maine fire lieutenant suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after responding to a fire during his first shift back from a 14-day quarantine.
Jackson Fire Department Lt. Harold “Eddie” Moore Jr., 42, died after returning home from work on Tuesday evening, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Earlier in the day, he had responded to a residential fire during his shift.
Moore’s death is the first line-of-duty firefighter death in Maine in 2020, according to News Center Maine. The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office is performing a routine unattended death investigation.
Additionally, the Maine CDC is investigating whether Moore’s death was related to COVID-19, according to WGME. Moore was presumed to be positive for the virus, although he was never tested, and had just completed his two-week quarantine when he returned to work on Tuesday. His wife said she had previously had the virus.
