SARDIS, Miss. — A Mississippi fire captain died in the line of duty due to COVID-19, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Sardis Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Guandes “Mook” Smith, 27, died on Monday after contracting the virus at the fire department in December, the USFA announced Wednesday.

Smith had been in hospice care since January, according to a report by FOX 13 Memphis. He was born with a heart condition and had two blood clots in his heart, family members said.

Smith had been named firefighter of the year in 2020 by the Sardis Fire Department. He is survived by his fiancée and three children.

Sardis firefighters honored Smith with a drive-by parade on Jan. 10 while he was on hospice.
