AVIS, Pa. — A volunteer Pennsylvania firefighter died Sunday from a suspected heart attack he suffered during a structure fire last week, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Avis Fire Company #1 Firefighter David G. Closs Sr., 67, was stationed as fire police at an intersection, directing traffic for the safe passage of apparatus when he experienced a medical emergency on Aug. 17, according to a statement from Avis Fire Chief Matthew S. Stover.

Closs died at the hospital six days later from an “apparent heart attack,” according to the USFA.

Closs previously worked as a police officer for 21 years, and is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cheryl, one son, two daughters and five grandchildren, according to his obituary.

“Closs lived a life devoted to helping his community, and others first serving as a police officer and later in life as a firefighter,” Stover wrote in his statement. “We ask all those that can, to join us in remembering the life of David G. Closs Sr. a life devoted to serving his community and fellow man selflessly and with unwavering devotion.”
