LOUISA COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia firefighter has died of her injuries after being involved in a fire engine crash while responding to a structure fire in July.

Twenty-year-old Louisa County Fire Department Firefighter Mia Ethridge died on Sept. 2, according to a Facebook post from the Stafford Volunteer Fire Department, where Ethridge was also a volunteer firefighter.

On July 9, Ethridge was in a fire engine with another firefighter responding to a call. Virginia State Police said that at some point during the response, the fire engine went off the road and struck a tree, WJLA reported. She was ejected from the fire engine and suffered life-threatening injuries. Med Flight flew Ethridge to UVA University Hospital for treatment.

The other firefighter was also injured and taken to a local hospital.

The Virginia State Police said both firefighters had been wearing seat belts.
