WARD, Ala. — Ward Volunteer Fire Department Acting Chief Freddy C. Reeves died in the line of duty on March 25, the U.S. Fire Administration announced Thursday.

Reeves was working a March 3 grass fire when his pants caught fire, injuring him. Other firefighters arrived and began tackling the blaze, while the chief left and returned to the scene with an apparatus to continue fire suppression operations.

When an ambulance arrived on scene, Reeves was transported to a hospital and was later transferred to the burn center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He had been responding to treatment, but Reeves became increasingly ill and died from his injuries on March 25.

Reeves served for 50 years.
