DOVER, Pa. — Chief Troy M. Dettinger, 55, died of an apparent heart attack on Nov. 30, hours after responding to an EMS call at a residence.
The Union Fire and Hose Company #1 chief went home after the call, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
Police officers performed a welfare check on Dettinger around 9:30 a.m. after he did not report to work. He was found dead at his home.
“Troy was a dedicated and vital member of Union Fire & Hose Co. #1 for 29 years. He was passionate about serving his community and surrounding stations. Troy will be tremendously missed. Rest in Peace Chief,” the fire department posted on Facebook on Dec. 1.
A viewing and a celebration of life were held. And Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered all commonwealth flags in York County to be flown at half-staff in Dettinger’s honor.
“It’s a shock to the station, the surrounding stations and also to the community,” Acting Fire Chief Gwainn McKeever told the York Dispatch. “It’s not something you want to do as a member of any fire department is planning the funeral after the death of your chief during the line of duty.”
