OLYMPIA, Wash. — Firefighters presented a woman with a wheelchair van for her disabled son.
KOMO News reported that Olympia firefighter Rick Leo was inspired to spearhead the project after responding to a call at the home of Lupe Rodriguez, who has atrial fibrillation.
Leo said Rodgriguez, who had a racing heart at the time, was very positive throughout the incident and even put her adult disabled son’s comfort first.
“She was impressive,” Leo said.
After the call, Leo was inspired to help the family by fixing up an old wheelchair van to give them a better vehicle to get around in.
Olympia Firefighters Local 468 funded the project, and Leo was given discounts by businesses such as Home Depot and Les Schwab for material and tires.
A year and a half later, the project was complete, and the van was presented to the Rodriguez family at the fire station.
Leo said he didn’t want the gift to be publicized, but Rodriguez wanted to make sure he got the credit he deserved and contacted the news station to have his story told.
