OLEAN, N.Y. — Six people were transported to Olean General Hospital, two of them with serious burns from a house fire at 304 E. State St., the Olean City Fire Department reported.
Firefighters were dispatched at 4:44 a.m. Sunday to the blaze at the corner of East State and Clinton streets to find heavy fire throughout the first floor and a trapped resident who had escaped through a third-story window and was awaiting rescue on the second-story roof.
Fire crews placed a ladder and brought the resident down while other firefighters stretched hose lines to bring the fire under control. The fire department reported that extensive fire travel occurred through void spaces of the home.
Six residents were taken to the hospital, four with minor injuries and smoke inhalation and two with “significant burn injuries,” according to the fire department.
Two dogs died in the fire and two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The City of Olean was assisted by Olean Police, Trans Am Ambulance, Cattaraugus County Deputy Fire Coordinator 4, Weston Mills Fire, Allegany Fire, National Grid and National Fuel. Love Thy Neighbor was on hand providing support to firefighters.
Olean City Fire Chief Eric Maurouard said the department reminds residents to ensure they have working smoke detectors and to always sleep with their bedroom door shut to prevent fire and smoke from spreading.
