Firefighter rescues family from burning home in Pa.

The Pittsburgh Tribune Review

TARENTUM, Pa. — Michael Remper said he didn’t hesitate when he heard children screaming from the second floor of a burning house in Tarentum early this morning.

“I went through the flames to grab the two kids and the mother and drag them all out,” said Remper, the Summit Hose Co. assistant fire chief.

The fire started about 12:30 a.m. in the house on Bakerstown Road, and Remper said he was the first to respond.

Brackenridge police officer Mike Duffy arrived almost immediately thereafter, and he and Remper kicked in the front door to an effort to reach the family, which was trapped on the second floor, Remper said.

The mother and her children — a daughter, 11, and son, 8 — were taken to West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, Remper said. The girl had minor burns on her feet, and the mother and son, 8, are being treated for smoke inhalation, he said. He did not identify the family.

A tenant who lives in an addition on the back that was turned into an apartment made it out safely, he said.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire.
