HOUSTON, Texas — Firefighters rescued twin 8-year-old girls from their burning home in southeast Houston Wednesday morning.
The one-alarm fire took about 20 minutes to extinguish. The girls were found by rookie Firefighter Richard Mackert.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Firefighter Mackert faced blinding thick smoke when he entered the house and shuffled his feet across the ground until he nudged the unconscious bodies of the girls with his boots.
The girls were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and were in critical condition, but are expected to survive.
Two other girls were also in the home, but were rescued by a neighbor when the fire first broke out.
