ANTIOCH, Calif. — A training outing Saturday morning for a Contra Costa County fire rescue boat turned into the real thing when its crew assisted passengers on board a boat taking water in the Delta, officials said.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters on board Rescue Boat 81 were in the right place at the right time and took four children and three adults off the 20-foot Sea Ray power boat about 11:45 a.m., officials said. Their ages were not immediately available.

The three-firefighter crew was doing some training near Sherman Island when it was flagged down by the boat occupants after it began taking on water, Capt. Tracie Dutter said.

The district’s Rescue Boat 85 and a Coast Guard vessel also responded as a precaution.

There were no injuries and the seven children and adults were brought ashore.

A private company was in the process Saturday afternoon of getting water out of the boat and towing it to shore, officials said.

What caused the boat to begin taking water was under investigation.
