Fulton County firefighters early Thursday rescued a man and woman from a predawn fire at a home in the south end of the county.
An alarm system alerted firefighters to the 6 a.m. blaze at the brick, ranch-style home on Erin Road, said fire department spokesman Gregory Chambers.
When firefighters arrived, they were able to quickly rescue the man from the garage of the home but had to knock a hole in an inside wall to reach the woman, Chambers said.
Chambers said areas of the home’s interior were partitioned off by burglar bars, hampering efforts to reach the woman.
“As they were doing the search and rescue, that’s when they encountered burglar bars,” Chambers said. “That’s why they had to [break through] the wall.”
Once they got the woman outside, firefighters “administered CPR, got heart drugs to her and got the defibrillator on her and stabilized her,” Chambers said. He said the woman, who was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, should survive. “She’s still going to be considered in critical condition, but it’s looking very positive,” he said.
The man was also taken to Grady for treatment of minor burns to his hands.
Their names were not released, but Chambers said they are siblings who shared the home off Erin Road near Camp Creek Parkway.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
