CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A woman and child were injured and multiple people are displaced after an overnight fire ravaged Chesapeake apartments.

The Chesapeake Fire Department was dispatched around 10:10 p.m. Friday to the Hunter’s Point Apartments, located at the 2000 block of Linster Street in the Portlock section of the city.

“Crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find heavy smoke and flames visible on the first and second floors,” said Lieutenant Robert Warren, public information officer for the fire department.

Firefighters were notified residents may still inside several apartments upon their arrival, and immediately began searching.

A child was rescued from a second-floor apartment and an adult woman was rescued from a first-floor apartment. They were both transported to a local emergency room for treatment.

The fire was called under control just before 11 p.m.

Eight apartment units were damaged by fire, smoke and water. The total number of displaced residents living in the affected apartments is unknown at this time, Warren said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
