STOVER, Mo. — A Stover couple were arrested Sunday after allegedly filing a false report that the man drowned in the Missouri River in Howard County in hopes of collecting life insurance money.
Robert Gabauer, 44, and Michelle Miesner, 43, are accused of felony attempted commission of fraudulent insurance act and filing a false police report.
On Saturday night, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers were called to assist the Howard County Sheriff’s Department with a report that Gabauer drowned while fishing at Franklin Island.
Law enforcement officers, as well as volunteer firefighters, searched the waters before calling off rescue efforts because of darkness. The search resumed Sunday morning.
As the day went on, though, Miesner’s story began to change, and those inconsistencies led officers to Gabauer, who was in Camden County.
The two were taken into custody and transported to the Howard County Jail.
