Photo of the Week: Rescuers save 3 from abandoned mine

Calling all fire photographers: FireRescue1 wants to see your pictures! The next time you come across something inspiring, take out the camera and submit it to FireRescue1! Just remember to include your name, agency information and brief background information on the picture.

This week's Photo of the week comes from the Galax (Va.) Fire Department, which shared photographs from the rescue of three missing hikers who became trapped inside an abandoned mine.

The hikers were miraculously able to get one bar of cellphone service in one area of the mine and call for help. Multiple agencies, including the Galax Fire Department, Pipers Gap Rescue Squad, Baywood Search and Rescue Squad, Galax Police Department and Blacksburg Technical Rescue, participated in the search and rescue. The hikers were safely removed from the caves about an hour and a half after the first call.

"Some 60 Twin County first responders worked seamlessly to affect a positive outcome to an extremely difficult incident!" officials wrote.
