DECATUR, Ill. — Firefighters were able to save some Christmas for a Decatur family displaced by a Wednesday fire.

“Crews were able to save several Christmas presents and move them to a safe location before any damage occurred,” Deputy Chief Jim Ohl said in a news release.

Firefighters were called to 715 W. Division at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday by the occupant of the home. The woman was able to get herself and two children out without injury after being alerted to the fire by operating smoke detectors, Ohl said.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the house and made entry through the back door with a hose line and moved through the house looking for fire, eventually discovering it in the basement.

While the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined, a light fixture malfunction may be to blame, Ohl said.

The family is being cared for by the Red Cross .
