DETROIT — Two people were arrested Thursday after crashing into a Detroit Fire Department battalion chief’s work vehicle, officials said.
Police officers traveling near Strasburg on the city’s north side at about 1 p.m. spotted a gray Jeep without a license plate, department representatives said in a statement.
“As the officers attempted to investigate, the driver of the vehicle sped away and struck a fire (vehicle) traveling west on E. McNichols,” according to the release.
The battalion chief had been driving on rounds in the 17000 block of Strasburg before the Jeep hit his SUV head-on, Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell said.
The two people inside the totaled Jeep immediately fled, he and police said.
“A short foot pursuit ensued and both suspects were apprehended and taken into custody,” police reported. “Further investigation determined that the Jeep was stolen.”
One suspect complained of head injuries after the crash, Fornell said.
Both men were transported to a hospital for evaluation then taken to the Detroit Detention Center, police said. Other details were not released.
The battalion chief was evaluated as a precaution but did not have serious injuries and was released, Fornell said.
