RUPERT, Idaho — A Rupert man died Saturday when two ATVs collided during a trip on backroads from Oakley to Jackpot, Nev. Three other Rupert men were injured.
Jay Paul Setser, 33, of Rupert, was pronounced dead at the scene, Elko County Undersheriff Clair Morris said.
Dust, speed and possibly alcohol contributed to the crash, Morris said.
Empty beer cans were found at the scene, but it is unknown whether the men were consuming alcohol Saturday. Morris said blood-alcohol tests are pending.
Jed Elmer Dansie, 35, of Rupert, Alan Wayne Brady, 38, of Rupert and Jerued Kris Uscola, 35, of Rupert were injured.
Mike Brown, Minidoka County Fire Protection District chief, said Brady is the battalion chief for East End Fire Department. Uscola is also a firefighter with the department.
Brown said Setser was a former member of the department and left in March 2013.
Brady and Uscola were taken by air ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. Brady was listed in critical condition and Uscola in good condition Monday.
Dansie was taken by air ambulance to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center with broken legs, Morris said. Hospital officials listed Dansie in fair condition Monday.
Morris said Setser was driving the lead ATV at 6:30 p.m. in a group of vehicles and for some reason stopped the vehicle in the road about 2 1/2 miles southeast of Jackpot.
Due to a cloud of dust in the road, the second vehicle hit the first one. Both vehicles rolled, Morris said.
Morris said the seating positions of the other three men are not known yet and the crash remains under investigation.
