KINGS PARK, N.Y. — In a twist of fate, one firefighter helped save a life just after she laid her husband to rest.

Roseanne Kleppsattel, 60, was returning from her husband’s funeral Tuesday in a fire truck when she and other firefighters arrived on scene of a five-car crash, where a woman was trapped in a vehicle. Kleppsattel sprung into action and manned fire hoses as colleagues worked to free the woman, reported CBS New York. At the time, she was wearing her husband’s turnout coat and a funeral dress, reported Newsday.

“When you’re in this type of service this many years, you react,” Kleppsattel said. ‘It’s in your DNA. It’s in your blood.”

Kleppsattel said she believes the best way to honor her husband, former Kings Park Fire Chief Fred Kleppsattel, is to continue saving lives and working as a firefighter.

“I just didn’t want to ride back in the limousine. I said ‘You know what, I’m gonna ride back in one of the engines.’ Well, fate put us there,” Kleppsattel told NBC New York.
