MT. CARMEL, Ill. — The Mt. Carmel Fire Department responded to an early morning trailer fire at 11516 E. 920 Lane in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Fire officials say flames were showing from the side of the trailer when they arrived around 4:40 a.m. Sunday morning. A Mount Carmel family is counting their blessings after their pet saved their lives. The homeowner told crews she and her grand kids were awakened by their family pig named “Lucky,” and escaped through a bedroom window.
The Farler family has had him since February. “They make great pets, they’re easy to potty train,” says Ina Farler. “He was potty trained in a days time. And they’re loving. They can be very protective actually. He loves my grandkids to death.” Maybe it was that protective instinct that went into play this morning. “He started screaming,” says Ina. “He would jump down, run to the door and then jump back up on the bed and hit me really hard. I sat up to see what was wrong with him because he usually doesn’t do that through the night. When I sat up, I realized the room was really smoky.”
