GOLDENDALE, Wash. — A 9,000-acre wildfire that more than 1,000 firefighters continued to battle Sunday has grown to 17,000 acres near Goldendale, Wash. as fires continue to burn across the Northwest.
The fire, which is one of many burning across Oregon and Washington, has forced authorities to close Highway 97 between Toppenish and Goldendale for several days.
The fire started around 11 a.m. Wednesday and was burning grasslands, shrubs and timber. The fire was spreading on all flanks and the steep topography made battling the blaze extremely challenging for firefighters.
