WHITERIVER, Ariz. — The death of an Arizona wildland firefighter who died in June has been classified as a line-of-duty-death.
Firefighter Deon “Dino” Jason Classay, of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fort Apache Agency, became separated from his Hotshots team and was unaccounted for at the time they were preparing to leave the scene of a wildfire on June 23.
Attempts to contact him via radio were unsuccessful and several sweeps of the area were necessary until his body was recovered, according to a USFA firefighter fatality notification sent Monday.
Firefighter Classay was 42 and had spent 22 years in the fire service.
