LOS ANGELES — More than 300 firefighters and more than 20 aircraft attacked a brush fire that surged to 600 acres in northern Los Angeles County.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Nathan Judy said the wildfire broke out Saturday morning in Mint Canyon near Sierra Highway. By afternoon it had grown to 600 acres, but firefighters from the Forest Service, Los Angeles County and Cal Fire had it 20 percent contained.

Judy said there are no homes or buildings in the remote area, but it has been difficult to reach by ground.

Six airplanes, including a pair of SuperScoopers, were assigned to the blaze, along with thirteen helicopters.

SuperScoopers are twin-engine turboprop amphibious tankers that skim water from lakes, reservoirs and the ocean and are built to land on unpaved runways and water.
