YONKERS, N.Y. — A fire lieutenant who worked as a first responder during 9/11 died Oct. 19 from cancer.

Funeral services were held Monday for Yonkers Fire Lt. John Rodriguez, 53, who was diagnosed with cancer after working during 9/11. Rodriguez was involved with decontaminating rigs, reported Westchester News.

“A great family man, a great fireman and a great man,” Yonkers Fire Lt. Peter Doran told NBC New York.

Rodriguez joined the department in 2000. He leaves behind his wife and two sons, reported The Journal News.

“If given the choice, he would be there again today working to make sure [he could help] anyone in distress,” Doran said. “There’s no question in my mind. That’s the type of guy he was.”
